In this session of our Change Your Thinking series, we cover the distortion in thinking of Mental Filters that is common among Dementia caregivers.
Mental Filters occur when you pick out one thing that goes wrong in a situation and discard all things that go well. These overgeneralizations cause us to notice our failures, but not see our successes in situations and daily life. For example, My blog is stupid because I had one negative comment out of several positive comments. Viewing life through a negative mental filter can create numerous consequences such as unfairness to those around you or yourself, lack of enjoyment in life, anxiety, and more as outlined in the video session.
Life can be overwhelming with negative thoughts at times; however, this video session covers several unique methods to combat negative mental filters. Some methods include writing down all good things that happened in the situation (small and large moments), choosing what experience you want to focus on, stopping and thinking about what you are thinking, and more as outlined in the session. By changing the filter you see the world through, you can bring positivity back into your life. Remember, you have the power to change your thoughts over time!
