Senior Day Program Helps Fight Isolation, Offers Family Respite And Support

The James L. West Senior Adult Day Program serves as a bridge between home and residential care. For families who care for their loved ones at home, the program provides flexible, secure and affordable assistance from highly trained staff Monday through Friday.

People with dementia can attend the program as long as they are willing to attend, can participate in, and benefit from the scheduled activities. Each person is assessed beforehand to make sure the program can meet their needs.

Isolation can be devastating for many older adults with dementia and their caregivers. For a person with dementia, socialization is much more than just interacting with others. Socialization is interacting with people, places and things, creating an awareness experience that keeps the person in the present.

The engaging environment and stimulating activity of our day program helps participants remain interested, independent and socially active. By being around others, socializing and participating in special dementia-specific programming, the participant may sleep better, experience a boost in mood, and feel more awake and alert.

The program is available up to 5 days a week, Monday through Friday, (7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.) every week of the year. Participants can attend every day or several days a month.

The cost of the program is $110 per day and is not covered by Medicare or Medicaid. Some long-term care insurance will reimburse for this type of care. We are happy to help you submit for reimbursement if your policy covers this type of care. A completed Admission application is required for participation in the program.

Meaningful music engagement integral at the Senior Day Program

‘Music’ is interwoven into the programming every day at the James L. West Senior Day Program, especially with sing-alongs, lyric guessing games, special musical guests and entertainment, and more.

Music Therapists also come during the week to provide large groups, small groups, and individualized visits as appropriate to the support needs of the participants.

Music Therapists are certified healthcare professionals who incorporate science-based interventions and utilize music to accomplish various personalized goals that are social, emotional, cognitive, physical, spiritual, and comfort-based.

Music therapists are skilled at reading the room and adapting programming to meet the in-the-moment needs of participants. Participants are invited to select specific music or types of engagement, fostering an environment where they can express themselves freely and safely. This approach enhances their sense of autonomy, independence, and voice. Relaxation techniques are also incorporated as appropriate.

Neurologic Music Therapy

Specialized Music Therapy Group programming also includes Drums Alive, a sensory drumming and exercise program led by a certified “Drums Alive” instructor that utilizes stability balls and guided movement to activate various parts of the mind and body.

Neurologic Music Therapy and Hospice & Palliative Music Therapy techniques are incorporated as appropriate to best support the personalized goals and support needs of the participants.
